Conservas culture: why Portugal never stopped
Elsewhere canned fish became a cheap fallback. In Portugal it stayed a craft — and then became a gift.
Portugal built its canning industry in the 19th century around Matosinhos, Portimão and Setúbal, and never dismantled it.
When demand fell, the houses went the other way: better fish, better oil, illustrated wrappers, dated tins. Canned fish became something you give, not something you hide.
That is why a Portuguese tin looks like a small book. The packaging is part of the product.
